ABSTRACT
The residence of the Warsaw Medical Society had important scientific, educational and social functions. It symbolised the prestige, organisational skills and commitment of its members, who, despite the political conditions, contributed to the maintenance and development of higher medical education in Warsaw and engaged in dialogue with the tsarist authorities to raise the level of hospital care and hygiene in the city. The residence, comprising a complex of buildings, has not been the subject of comprehensive analyses. In the study of sources that have not been explored to date, the history of its construction was presented. The main purpose of the article is to present how the extended utility programme of the tenement was implemented, with the functional and spatial layout adapted to the Society’s needs. The entire complex was constructed in stages by adapting and modifying buildings, replacing them with new, optimised ones, while introducing innovative structural and technical solutions, in line with the Society’s overarching idea of progress. The stylistic analyses carried out showed attention to the architectural quality of the elegant edifice, references to the full Italian Renaissance with decorative elements with hidden meanings from the medical field, intended for a sophisticated audience. The building was part of the urban development trend in Warsaw in the second half of the 19th century; it did not weight down on the surrounding buildings with its scale and had the characteristics of an elegant villa, which was connected with its location by the Ogród Saski.
