ABSTRACT
The Department of the History of World Architecture at the Faculty of Architecture of the Warsaw University of Technology was established in 1991 as a result of the division of the Institute of the History of Architecture and Art into six smaller units. The original composition of the Department met the statutory requirements of the Warsaw University of Technology, and included two people with the status of independent research workers: Jolanta Putkowska and Jadwiga Roguska. Two auxiliary science staff members, Anna Agata Gruchalska (Wagner after getting married) and Marek Wacławek supplemented the staff of the Department. Throughout the Department’s existence between 1991 and 2017, the composition changed but never exceeded the number of four FTEs, as a result of the curriculum and teaching loads. Individual team members' periods of full-time employment at the Department: Jolanta Putkowska (1991-2003), Jadwiga Roguska (1991-2016), Anna Agata Wagner (1991-2017), Marek Wacławek (1991-1998), Paweł Wąsowski (2000-2008 and 2014-2017), Iwona Szustakiewicz (2008-2017), Radosław Gajda (2009-2013), Katarzyna Dankiewicz (2014-2017). Jadwiga Roguska headed the Department between 1991 and 2016. Jolanta Putkowska served as Vice-Dean of the Faculty of Architecture between 1993 and 1999. The Department’s didactics included lectures and seminars on the subject of History of World Architecture: ancient, medieval, modern (Renaissance, Baroque, Classicism) and history of architecture of the 19th and 20th centuries (historicism and modernism) at the rate of 2 hours of lectures and 4 hours of seminars in semesters 1 and 2 between 1991 and 1993, after changes in the curriculum, this became 2 hours of lectures and 2 hours of seminars in semesters 1 and 2 between 1996 and 2015. A further reduction in the curriculum for the history of world architecture involved reducing the number of lectures to one hour per week in semesters 1 and 2 between 2015 and 2017. In response to the reductions in the History of World Architecture course, the Department offered optional lectures and seminars. At various times, lectures and seminars were held on the following topics: History of Gardens, Typology of Architectural Detail, History of Warsaw Architecture, History of Art and Civilisation, A Work of Art in a Cultural Context, History of Non-European Architecture, Typology of Public UtolityArchitecture. The Department’s staff have lectured on the History of Town Planning and Architecture at the Faculty of Geodesy and Cartography of the Warsaw University of Technology since 2005, and on the History of Architecture and Art at the University of the Third Age of the Warsaw University of Technology since 2006. The subject of the Department’s field practice was the measurement of architectural detail of the 19th and 20th centuries. The department held away seminars in Vienna. An important field of activity of the Department with few staff, but significant scientific potential, was the training of scientific staff. During her tenure at the Department of the History of World Architecture, Professor Jolanta Putkowska promoted three PhDs (four more later), and Professor Jadwiga Roguska promoted six PhDs. The doctoral theses prepared in the Department were of a high standard and were published in full as books or in extensive excerpts. Doctoral theses and research papers built up the Department’s scientific specialisation, covering the problems of subject areas such as architecture of Warsaw, architecture of the 19th and 20th centuries (historicism and modernism), architectural detail of the time and architectural biography. Publications by the Department’s staff were devoted to this topic: authored and edited books, chapters in books and articles in journals. Members of the Department’s team were editors-in-chief of scientific publications: Jolanta Putkowska edited the “Prace Naukowe Wydziału Architektury Politechniki Warszawskiej” (Scientific Papers of the Faculty of Architecture at the Warsaw University of Technology) between 2000 and 2003, Jadwiga Roguska edited the “Kwartalnik Architektury i Urbanistyki” (Architecture and Town Planning Quarterly) of the Polish Academy of Sciences between 2007 and 2012. Iwona Szustakiewicz was the editorial secretary of the Quarterly between 2008 and 2013. The department participated in international cooperation conducted by the Faculty of Architecture of the Warsaw University of Technology with architectural universities in Darmstadt, Berlin, Assiut (Egypt), and coordinated cooperation with the Faculty of Architecture in Homs (Syria).
