ABSTRACT
The article gives an account of an original
educational pilot project introducing an
element of sociological research into the
architectural design process. The educational
project involved students of the Faculty of
Architecture of the Warsaw University of
Technology and the Institute of Applied
Social Sciences at the University of Warsaw.
As part of a classes on residential multifamily
buildings, the architects designed
residential complexes for three sites in the
historic urban fabric of Lidzbark Warmiński.
The sociologists designed and carried out
a social survey among the town’s residents,
commissioned by the architects, which
included issues relevant to design decisions.
Both the specific results of the survey and
the more general, understanding insight into
the residents’ perspective were implemented
in the designed architecture. In the opinion
of its authors, the project has brought various
benefits, both cognitive and related to the
translation of perspectives.
